Want to learn fluent Chinese like me? Check out my Chinese course ‘’Street-Smart Chinese’’: www.streetsmartlanguages.com/chinese
That last in the black hoodie was definitely hitting on you! Lol
Tina A. Wall
@Brian PageMost things are fake. I am disabled so I like to learn new things. I know very little of a couple languages but it dose not hurt to try. I also know that we HAVE NOT landed or walked on the moon.
@Tina A. Wall The reactions are fake! The whole channel is all acting, wish people would wake up instead of being so gullible. If a video says watch some react to something, 99.99999 % of the time it's fake! They do it to make money people, That's why the video goes exactly as the rehearse them.. Also, a camera crew is following them..lol.
This is so cool to see people being IMMEDIATLY more friendly and less shy once they speak your language
@Sylvia Maresca 😂lmao serves them right
@Kyle Kyle i think you are taking stuff to literal. Xiaoma might be at fault here in a lot of videos he says gossip, but they aren't really saying bad stuff for it to be gossip, so i think they are just talking about him. Like in those 3 seconds you mention they were talking about what was on his shirt and nothing else.
@Knives In the first three seconds of the video it says, “They’re gossiping about me.” So, they were either saying things they wouldn’t say if they knew XIomajdb knew their language, or Xiomara doesn’t know the definition of gossip.
@Kyle Because it means they value it enough to put effort into learning and mastering, and the fact that they communicated with that language instead of English just shows how much they value it. Native English speaking people won't understand this as it is a universal language. Either way, i just wanted to know where you got the information that they were talking shit about him.
@Knives Why would you be more friendly to someone just because they speak the same language as you do?
Marcelo Benatto Ferreira
Could you imagine this?...A prank channel that's actually wholesome, instead of a complete fake garbage. Loved the video, brought a huge smile in my face, keep it up.
Seriously! These are so cute and so fun and you can see everyone is having a good time. Most prank stuff is at someone’s expense. Bravo
@FULLMETAL the law lol
@FULLMETAL uhh law apparently?
@FULLMETAL actually, for many states within the U.S., there a "one-party consent" law, which only requires at least one party/member to consent to being recorded, including the one recording I'm assuming he's in New York, which is a one-part consent state So it is perfectly legal, it's more of a moral issue of stopping when someone asks, which it seems no one had asked him not to (and his camera is clearly visible-it's hooked to his jacket)
My husband has a tattoo with the name “white dragon” on it because that was the nickname they gave him when he studied medicine in China for 6 months. He double and tripled checked with his Chinese friends that the characters actual meant the correct thing.
@Haruhi Suzumiya learning hirigana and kata, is shi - white, and ryu dragon? I don't know the combo ryu? Just curious if I'm thinking right?
Blue eyes white dragon is a Yu-Gi-Oh card
@SozBoz not everything with the same name is the same name. People are too sensitive now a days.
All hail your husband The White Dragon
This right here is the reason why I'd love to learn a new language. Having that instant positive connection with a stranger just because you speak their native tongue brings out much purer form of joy between humans. Life is great after all!
I wish I could have the same experience. I learned Spanish out of necessity because like 80% of the people in my city speak Spanish. It's kind of expected and usually the first language that people go to. They are usually surprised that I am 100% Gringo, but I never really get to make any connections.
"Erasmus", you have the perfect name to say that 😂
Reminds me of 50 years ago when I was teaching conversational English in Japan. I spoke little Japanese, but my boss was fluent. One day he accompanied me to a shipyard where I taught. Some of the students got there early and started gossiping about us. He was translating their comments for me, then when the session started , he stood up and addressed them in Japanese - a few red faces.
You never know who's listening
nice memories dalton thaks for sharing
Lady: “I bet you have a Chinese girlfriend” Him: “I have a Chinese wife” Lady: “WOAH”
insert *surprise pikachu face* here
@Mohammed Miah no, what you’re looking for is Pale. Asian like Asians the most
@T'khota Tianobody said "stink" except you. A fact which was appropriate, pertinent and useful to the discussion was stated with neutral, not malicious context. You don't get to restrict such speech because you took personal, second-hand offense. That's a personal problem of yours to deal with. And in case you haven't noticed, I'm the demographic he's talking about.
@Qui9 It is not racist, but it is definitely rude. Don't tell people they stink.
@Key Master There is no polite way to tell someone they smell bad, nope. Literally no one on this planet wants to be told they smell bad, no matter how you word it.
To anyone who might not understand, the ladies at the fish market weren’t making fun of him or his clothes, just pointing out that it had a funny saying on it. Just like if you saw someone with a picture of a dog on their shirt you would say “look at that cute dog on that shirt”.
@Ram oh yeah it's totally a race thing rather than a human nature and body language thing. And when did I say anything about him? Fact is he's baiting people into these situations by knowingly displaying things on his clothing that will illicit reactions that are rude for "content." He is no better. For the record.
It was exactly what they did. If he would let it go on longer more and more things would be revealed. But they changed fast when they learned he understood. As anyone would. Dont even try to make that comparison.
@mydogeatspuke Everyone but the white man gets the benefit of the doubt it seems lol
@Tsukimonster you know what they say about assuming..?
@mydogeatspuke Do you know Mandarin? I don't know Mandarin but i assume OP does and was explaining the "tone" of the conversation.
This is the only "prank" I've seen where the whole situation is so non toxic it's so refreshing to see! Love the video hope to see more in the future!
I just LOVE this! My dad spoke fluent Japanese. He learned while he was stationed in Japan when he was in the army. When I was younger, we'd go to Japanese restaurants, and he would speak to the staff. They used to get the biggest smile on their faces when he would launch in to ordering and asking them about their families. He was Scandinavian and had a crew cut so they never suspected that he knew how to speak their language.
I love how you buy from them and they laugh with him, so honoring of everyone and their culture , thank you for showing humility
I always love when you break out the Fujianese to people who are already enjoying the fact that your Mandarin is so good. Their reactions are always priceless and this was one of the best ones yet.
It blows them away. And the Cantonese.
I mean the joy is so grand all of us here watching are getting hit with a feeling of joy ourselves. Watching respect/admiration/understanding all these complicated emotions that one generally strives to find in short breaths, happening all in an instant. Its fantastic.
Very unique and interesting. The reactions are joyful.
@beebtw xiran goes by they/them pronouns!!
I must find a way to learn thats best! To hear all the smack as they assume you don't understand... Then... BOOM!
It's so heartwarming, especially in these times where we've been isolated for too long, to see people connecting like this. Keep posting these videos, Xiaoma! They really lift my spirit!
❤ THIS. More languages should be introduced into the early American curriculum. Our kids are citizens of the world. It's a fantastic thing to be able to communicate in many places in the world. It's also fun!
@Doug Taylor The United states doesn't have an official language, English is the most common language, I also think we should try our best to be a United humanity.
@Smug Potato What actually needs to be done is have it required in school to speak the language you are learning.
@Pro Semite Well having a lingua franca is a different thing and, if that is what you meant from the beginning, I agree that it wouldn't be a problem as long as it doesn't eliminate the underlying language diversity (if that is possible) and as long as it is accepted by all the parties. Anyway in fact such languages emerge during history, with English being the most widespread as of today; yes, it is true that English is not currently spoken by everyone, but the extent to which it is spoken is something that is already very impressive to me (of course I am talking of at least basic usage)
@Matteo Sposato I don't exactly see your point. Yes, languages are the result of their environment and people are attached to them but that can be said of everything. A global language would perfectly encapsulate the philosophy of language, that being ease of communication and it certainly isnt impossible, all countries have already accepted English as the lingua franca of the world and mamy have begun to teach it in school. The only real problem here is the people not being able to access the education which is admittedly inefficient
Can never get over their reactions of a American speaking their language. And those ladies gushing over him having a Asian wife was cute. I’m glad this dude gives them this experience
This dudes laugh puts a smile on my face, great to see him get along with the community.
I love the respect you show even when you know they are mocking you. That, more than anything, adds to the fascination when they learn your linguistic true capacity and garners much deserved respect (dude who recognizes you from THvid and fanboys for a pic 😁). Love it!
Dude, you are absolutely amazing. What a great ambassador of kindness and humility you are!
Several of us Canadians learned Vietnamese (or tried to). One gal became quite fluent. When she was around the corner and a Vietnamese person heard her, they would be shocked wnen they saw her. She was tall, blond, blue eyed. Once a couple of young Vietnamese men started speaking badly about her. Right away she spoke in Vietnamese that she knew what they were saying. Hahaha
This is so beautiful and peaceful. Made me forget just how messed up the world was for a moment. The acceptance from both parties, the mutual love and respect .... The laughter. Oh life, how did we get it so wrong?
This is the only channel I know of that has "bait and switch" hilarity with zero toxicity. I hope your channel grows and prospers.
Erwin van Broekhoven
He is super wholesome you should check out him giving money to his favorite struggleling restaurants. On chinese new year. It is heartwarming
If the toxicity you speak of is this thing of some THvidrs where they throw pre-packed phrases and talk a lot rather than listening and having organic conversation, yes he avoids that. I've learned with him that you don't need to have big vocabularry, only enough to have a back and forth but you also need to remember to listen and not just show off.
@yo early in his channel he only talks in mandarin but after the what happened with laosung he started learning more languages and carry the history of lao, I bet that lao is really proud of him
Rest in peace to Laoshu who had the same mentality
What this guy and others are doing is amazing, all these kind of streams show me that the people in the places he goes all seem very friendly, happy, and excepting. It just goes to show putting in the effort helps better connect us. Of course its not as easy for everyone but we could all do our bit especially when visiting foreign Countries it would definitely feel les foreign if we were as good as this guy. I wish I had he's skill set and determination.
World Traveling Foody
This kind of thing happened to me on the cruise I went. We got into a crowded elevator and I greeted everyone in all the languages I knew. I thought that way I include everyone. 🤣 of course there had to be an elderly swiss couple in the back looking impressed and the man asked his wife: did you hear how many languages he spoke? She said, but I bet he can't speak swiss german. I turned around and said with a big smile, in perfect swiss German: Of course, I do speak Swiss German. Their Jaws dropped to the floor. 🤣🤣
World Traveling Foody
@MagikMako that's absolutely correct. Except for the Swiss-French people.🤣🤣 They don't like to speak German. They don't like us, and we don't like them. But we tolerate each other.🤣
World Traveling Foody
@AnNa Mo no way, you got schwyzer fernseh in bavaria? Cool, didn't know it goes that far. Oh that rumantsch language is something nobody understands here. Only the people from the Graubünden region speak it. The swiss Hill Billie's,(just kidding). 🤣🤣🤣 And even there it's getting less and less. Someday i'm sure it will be lost. Which is a pitty, but if its not passed on to future generations, thats what will happen.
oh that's fun!! I'm from the south of Bavaria, so we had "Schweizer Fernsehen DRS" when I was little which is where I learned to understand Schwytzerdytsch. But the one thing that was always a mystery to me was Rätoromanisch! There used to be a programme called "Switzara rumantscha" (I'm sure I spelled that wrong!) which was fascinating to watch as I didn't understand a word!
@Ethan D. anyone born in Switzerland knows German, French, and Dutch. +English in school so that four languages exposed to at a young age. In some parts of Switzerland they speak Italian too. Basically if you are born in the right part of Switzerland you are immediately a polyglot lol
These videos never really fail to make me smile. It makes me giddy to watch these wholesome, genuine interactions. Language is the greatest hurdle when it comes to trying to connect with people from other countries! Wish I was as dedicated and talented as this guy!
It's so amazing that you would devote so many years of your life respecting another culture and learning their language. What an amazing insight. I consider myself fortunate if I meet a single person at my local supermarket who is respectful of their own culture and has the ability to string a proper sentence together using their native tongue.
Love the reactions from people who wasn’t expecting you to speak their mother tongue… also I find videos from your channel to be wholesome as you form bonds with strangers by learning to speak their language
you are just an awesome person. your appreciation for culture and willingness to learn about others is what the world is truly missing. hopefully you continue to find success cause you deserve it
for me it's the way you get everyone laughing and giggling together. letting people have a moment of fun at work is nice
I love how happy the people become when they realise you speak Chinese. When I was in the Navy we were visiting Hong Kong. One of my shipmates got his wife's name tattooed on his wrist in Chinese characters. Later we were at some street markets & an old man at one of the stalls pointed to the tattoo on his wrist & asked him if he knew what it said. He told him that it was his wife's name. The old man laughed & replied "That not your wife name, that say Get Fucked"
I was not EXPECTING that 😂😂😂
Ahmed Ibn Sanun
@TheMooper27 I like speaking Arabic to Mexicans, best part is I understand Spanish but they don’t understand Arabic l
@Darwinek for fun if others do it but racist if i make fun of Koreans while im in S. Korea in english to their faces
One thing I have absolutely always loved about your videos is the impact of positive outcomes out of every small conversation over such a simple thing. You make going to watch content on THvid a much easier task without negativity. You're making such a big impact for even easy going watchers! Keep it up, love the work! ❤️
I love showing my friends and family your videos! I always thought I sucked at learning languages because I barely based Spanish in school but now that im 24 im proud to say I have been relearning Spanish where I left off as well as Japanese. I have been learning for over a month now and I never thought I would even know as much as I do now. thank u for inspiring me to keep learning!
love your videos, just happy natural interactions with people on the street, and the haply feeling they get when you speak the their native tongue is wonderful to see. I wish I could speak a language this fluently.
My learning disability make it difficult for me to learn different languages, but from jobs I've had I've been able to kinda understand Spanish and Italian to an extent, and some Japanese from watching a lot of anime and foreign films, I would really like to learn them fully but it's so damn difficult for me
ususally, trends that get people famous get stale after awhile, but I swear this will never get old. I love seeing the joy in their faces when they hear you speak, love the content man, please keep making it!
Little Wolf Taima
@HBradley ok, you can leave then
@Brian Page You have misread my comment so bad that I don't even have the energy to correct everything you're wrong about lol
So, you like actors faking that these are real situations? They do it to make money on THvid, just do it in public because it just seems more real that way, right? The fact they have an entire film crew with them doesn't give the fakeness away, does it? It's the same people making fake helping the homeless videos in mass numbers too, that way they can also seem like people they clearly aren't to make a buck!
@HBradley look and you shall find and you’re that comment I look for in every video and found that’s twiggerhderd :/
A. Rose Cash
I was partially raised by people from China and I’ve sadly forgotten a lot of what I’ve learned but when I was little a lot of people would go “😃 wait a minute-“ when we’d be out with them at restaurants or at the store. Still makes me laugh when I think about it 😂
@Xiaomanyc, your interactions and reactions with so many people and showing the happiness in both yourself, the people you suprise to delight and your generally absolute fantastic attitude gives me more hope in humanity as a whole. Thank you for your content and keeping up brotha!
I love this channel. You really break down barriers and prove that people are not all that different down to the core, and differences we do have should be celebrated and admired!
Your videos always make me smile- the connections your form through language are inspiring! I’m half Mexican and am wanting to learn Spanish more fluently to feel more connected to my culture. Thanks for the inspiration!
Michael Van Leesten
This guy just spreads joy and happiness. The world needs more people like him. 😀
I agree with you! How can people do this because Almost everybody is not a genius like this guy. It’s amazing he learns languages in 24 hours sometimes.
@Jackson Quinn What's the virus have too do with the videos this guy makes, Einstein?
Linda Mae Mullins
@Seeing Through ❤️
Really shows us how language really is a barrier, social and cultural. Sure, everyone can learn English, but you can't express certain things exactly the same in English compared to your native language.
I'd love to learn a few dialects of Chinese at some point myself; It's a life goal to become a polyglot so that I can speak to just about anyone I come across. As a native English speaker I've already picked up German and French, and living in upstate New York I have interactions not unlike this all the time with folks from Quebec and Montreal. Canadian french dialects aren't quite the same as the school-taught Parisian, but it's close enough minus the occasional slang.
I always love how happy they are when you speak to them in their language. ♥️
Such a fun interaction 😊 the choice of response would make me feel a little concerned but then again I don’t normally talk about others around me freely. What I grew up with is a sense of fear towards talking about others differences as if it were a bad thing. Our attitude when in regard to certain topics, is so different compared to other cultures. We don’t take the route of appreciating each others differences for fear of insulting or upsetting others. It’s a shame really 😕
Xiaoma must have the most random collection of things at home he doesn't even need but bought for the purpose of his videos!
There's a reason he's put on weight over the years haha
Everyone needs a good back scratcher
We know he’s got tons of candy at home lol
It's just a mountain of takeout boxes, wall to wall, floor to ceiling
Having seen a few videos like this on different channels, what's most striking is the people speaking their native tongue have never been mean. Here they're amused by the shirt but nobody was insulting or mocking him. I was hesitant to watch videos like this at first because I usually find traps being set for people just as creepy as the private behaviour sometimes caught (and selectively revealed). He didn't draw it out waiting for someone to embarrass themselves, he presented a benign opportunity and spoke up as soon as any reference was made. What a delight to witness only friendliness and no conflict! Toxic behaviour gets far too great a share of our attention.
it's so easy for people to accept us just by being able to speak the same language how people can respect , if we just can speak the same langangue
I love the constant huge smiles in my face while listening to your laughs and feeling into your energy. 😊
I AM going to learn a new language soon. These videos, for a long time, just gave me great joy and entertainment, but now it's making me want to learn something. Thank you for the inspiration!
I think that one store where the people were talking like: "his shirt says foreigner... Should we tell him?" And they actually told you. Those were the only genuinely nice ones. Because they were behaving nice and proper to you BEFORE you showed them that you could understand them.
@Eduardo marques I know someone like that. Me. I have been wearing a mask and I have not gotten covid.
@Eduardo marques I and many others in town didn't get covid because everyone was wearing masks deapite there being hundreds of cases in a nearby city
@TeamViolin: I know it’s just a movie, but in The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift, “gaijin” seemed to be fairly derogatory, or at least not used positively.
@J. Drenth the facts are that even during mask mandates COVID didn't even slow down.
I loved this! The people actually told him and that is awesome. I wish I knew another language besides New Enlander. Keep making em smile and laugh. I absolutely love all the laughter in this video. Raised my vibration. Thank you 😊
I wish I could learn a language half as well as you have learned Chinese. That would be amazing.
This guy is a special type of human jeez never fails to impress or make people smile
Much respect! People always respect you for being in their country and learning their language. 👍🏾
I had a French language teacher. He spoke about ten languages. Was a translator in the Army. He went on vacation in Canada and was on a bus in Quebec and a bunch of people were making nasty comments about him during the ride. When the bus pulled up to his stop, he told all the people on the bus to F off in French. He said they were so shocked that he knew what they had been saying about him.
@Janet Yeoman if Quebec had their way no English would be allowed anywhere.
@jesterlead yes and the reason was France had lost lost 50% of their military manufacturing capability. Their white flag factory had just burned to the ground, LOL
I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO SPEAK 10 LANGUAGES AS WELL 😧😧
Pathetic how humans behave when they think you can't understand them. Language being like a safety barrier for the ignorant.
The ladies were talking about you first then flirted with you later! So hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂! You’re beyond amazing! I only have three languages under my belt but you’ve inspired my to expand my knowledge to learn more languages. I’m really enjoying the content. Keep it up! Congrats!
i just loooove how wholesome your content is ♥ keep on doing what you do best xiaoma :-*
Absolutely love this content. Keep doing what you do!
First time seeing your videos. Looks like everyone had some good fun with this. Plus, it was impressive to see how you impressed others with your accent and knowledge.
I love how much they 'privately' enjoyed his shirt saying foreigner... and then when he's like, "what's wrong with foreigners?" And they're like, "nothing, your shirt is great!!" They were all so fun and kind, every last one of them was amazing. Extremely kind people, all of them.
@Tai Henne Fun fact, here in Asia, most asians are racist to other asians. That's just the fact of life but I can help by not judging someone by what they can't change.
@ricebucket99 ASMR oh..so could that be why he doesn't appear to make eye contact, his head down?
But how come he never seems to "look" at the people he's talking to..head always seems down..is it a culture thing? Sign of respect or maybe just the camera angle?
@Sine Nomine I only said Asians can be dark skinned coz someone replied to me saying Asians are racist towards dark skinned ppl lmao And everything you said was common sense, though I appreciate your thoughts.
Gotta love how friendly some of these people are. Can’t say the same about the states. I’m also becoming a lot more tempted to interact with Asian people (I’m not around many Asian people) just because of how friendly and interactive they are. Seems like all the conversations you have are bright
I think this is in the states though
I love how the Chinese call you a foreigner in your own country (and their country) and yet you speak Mandarin. It's a crazy mixed-up world! Really the shirt is hilarious. Great interaction. Puts a smile on everyone's faces, myself included.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!
The reason why I learn chinese is to read novels, and this makes me hopeful that the 3 year of studying I did will be used in atleast 1 situation like this.
Just Some Guy without a Mustache
I just really love how impressed they are with your fluency, you undoubtedly make their days better too
Jesus is LORD
@Al P. Read the Book of Revelation, then John, and you will see.
Jesus is LORD
@Al P. Truly, truly I tell you: “He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” Revelation 22:20 NIV The LORD of LORDS, NAME of ALL NAMES is coming back SOON. “Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.” 2 Peter 3:3-10 NIV

@anarki777 Mandarín is the hardest to learn
Because Mandarin is very difficult. Lots of people try to learn, but 99% give up.
This truly Never gets old. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK STUD
i just cant understand as someone who only speaks english how you could speak another language better then a native speaker to the point you get complimented almost instantly
The High Priestess
@Xiaomanyc You have to be one of the coolest people on You Tube and pretty much everywhere. As you know learning a language that is not our mother tongue is loving a culture. Respect!
I can’t NOT smile on any of these videos, always making me grin when I don’t wanna, anybody on the planet LOVES when Americans learn their culture and admire it, this whole THvid is just based off of something beautiful and wholesome and I should’ve subscribed long ago but just did today, long time watcher tho ❤️💯
This has happened to me in elevators in my old university, back when my Chinese was at the lower advanced level (I could read 3000 characters and understood pretty well... I haven't practiced in eight years so a lot of that is now gone). They were talking about me, so when they got off the elevator, I made a snarky comment about how nice it was to meet other people that spoke Mandarin and ended it with a wave and a 再見！
@Johnny1 Max I used to be conversational in German, and nearly fluent in Swedish. But I've lived in the US for the last 35 years straight...I didn't give up the languages, there's just no practical use for them here.
@vorpal22 haha what a coincidence I literally just had beef and mutton rendang with the family. Good stuff. Well for the most part, in Chinese school, mandarin is what is taught but Cantonese isn’t. I’m not entirely sure about the writing and what not tho cos I can’t actually read it. I can understand it well enough but reading, nope. Mandarin I picked up from my friends and listening to them, Cantonese tho is from Hong Kong dramas and my mom hahahaha
@surendran9311 Nice! I didn't know that Malaysia had many Cantonese speakers. Do they use traditional or simplified characters there? My mainland China private teacher used to laugh at me for always insisting on using traditional hanzi... I can read simplified well enough but I've never bothered to learn to write them... but then again, I am currently studying Japanese and Classical Chinese, so knowing the traditional characters has made that easier. I love Malaysian Nyonya food... what I wouldn't give for a proper beef rendang. I'm in Hawaii now and there is a woman who makes beef rendang here but it is *so* mild.
@vorpal22 HAHA I live in malaysia and theres a lot of cantonese and mandarin speakers here. And because im mixed chinese and indian, i sometimes get confused as a malay person and i get a lot of chinese people speaking behind my back sometimes and i just turn around and they get hellaaaaa confused when they realised i understood everything they said.
@Johnny1 Max It doesn't have to make sense to you, but here's the explanation: I was living in Canada, and then moved to Chile, where there are almost no Chinese language speakers, materials, or availability. As I didn't speak Spanish, the priority became learning Spanish instead of continuing on in Mandarin at the time: I had nobody to practice with. I also don't really like Mandarin (largely Taiwanese, as that's what I insisted on studying) entertainment, so I felt little inclination to get that listening component in by watching it. Furthermore, my job is very demanding, and requires a lot of study constantly as is. I also have a severe and chronic autoimmune disorder that really leaves me drained and sometimes unable to function for months at a time. Combine all those things, and I had higher priorities to fill the time I did have, fewer opportunities to maintain my skills, and a lack of energy due to severe and medication-resistant Crohn's Disease. Now I have moved to a community with many east Asians and my disease is currently in remission, so I am picking back up my Mandarin (which is going very well), learning Japanese, and studying Classical Chinese for fun. Really, I have no desire to learn Spanish and only got by with the basic minimums for communication, but it was a difficult time. You'd be surprised how fast it comes back. I've only been going a few weeks and I'm probably back up to 1500 characters. Also, I spend a great deal of time studying things not out of practicality, but because I have interests and enjoy challenging my mind. I also study, for example, many programming languages that I am vanishingly unlikely to use, because the experience of studying something quite different from what you are familiar with is one that broadens the mind and keeps it sharp: the process and not the end result is what is sometimes important. At least Japanese will be very useful for me to know since I like a lot of Japanese entertainment, and knowing Chinese characters is a huge help to learning Japanese.
This made me smile so much... just shows that if you speak someone's language, you connect to them on another level
I really enjoyed this episode. You really make me want to learn Mandarin but I feel like I will never learn it.
These videos are pure joy and everything good about humanity :) small interactions that go a long way in bringing seemingly different people together. Remember we are all the same just .1 % different if that!
Your videos are super funny, but also, like, sneaky inspirational. Everyone you speak to just immediately lights up and their personalities explode out. Everyone goes from that familiar, awkward, stilted communication style that involves as few words as possible to BAM, suddenly you have these lovely, interesting people, having a completely relaxed (if not a little bemused) conversation with you. You seriously make me want to learn Chinese.
It clearly warms people's hearts when you suddenly speak in their less common language. The weight on them of not being at ease when talking is lifted unexpectedly and you compliment them deeply by your dedication to their culture. Beautiful!
@Kyle exactly. had the same experience in japan. i'm no where near as fluent as his chinese but you would hear lots of shit talk from shops. then you speak up and all of a sudden they are your best friend ever.
it doesnt warm their heart , they know they are busted.
I love "less common". We realize how big the Chinese population is? I know you mean it's not spread around the globe. But still.. 🤣
I love how he responds to them in Chinese, and it takes most of them a few seconds to realize it. Haha!
The comedy aspect of this channel always has me coming back. You bait people just long enough so that the surprise gets the best reaction but it's 100% genuine. I just wish you had a way to hide your camera because I'd 100% be suspicious of you if you were filming.
Great video. I love how you speak with people. You have a good heart and soul, great language skills too. Keep doing these videos. :-)
Youve inspired me to start learning languages, we have a large Polish population where i live in the uk also Romanian so im starting with these 🙏🏻 thank you
Xiaoma, these videos always make me smile because they show the humanity of the wonderful people that you meet. Keep up the great work!
@James Ley maybe he will appreciate it now that it’s vintage haha. What a good memory
@Joe bro what? Get outta here ain’t nobody ask for your absolutely unrelated comment. Your comment had absolutely no connection to the main question at hand. I understand why they were making fun of him. The only thing I said was why would you call them “ wonderful people” if they were talking shit on the low, no they didn’t say anything fully offensive, but it’s pretty universal for someone is making fun of you
@Nicholas Rodriguez Were you not able to comprehend that the madarin on his hoodie says foreigner? As that's the reason for them having a laugh about it.
Your videos never fail to make me smile xD
These videos never fail to make me smile.
This made me so happy 😊 everyone embraced you with love and laughter
I am I happy to have found your channel. Every video like this one makes me smile the entire length of the video. Without me even realizing
This was soooo wholesome and I love how literally everyone immediately said “oh no, nothing, it’s great!” When you asked what was wrong with ‘foreigner’ haha
man, please keep making it!
I was on a boat staffed with mostly Romanians. They were so appreciative that I could speak just a little bit of it. Most other passengers didn’t even know how to say good morning. Language removes a lot of barriers in certain contexts.
@saige records you should visit if you haven’t. Interesting place.
@theknightswhosay i don't live in romania but my pagents come from there
@theknightswhosay nu trăiesc în românia dar părinți mei vin de la românia :)
@saige records daca esti in romania, noapte buna
as a romanian person i approve 👍
I love those reactions of all these people cuz they have so much love in them… and ur videos are crazy cool. Do you have any video of practicing and learning of all these languages? I really want to know ho easier learn more languages. Thank you 🙏🏻
Always nice to see people smile of different country when you know how to speak their language.
Just happened upon your channel in recommendations and thoroughly enjoying it! Pleasurably laughed during this one. I have a question. Have you ever worn the "foreigner" shirt in China? If not I think it would be a fantastic Ice breaker there. If you have where can i find the video?
Most Impressive! I always get a kick out of the delight that Asian new commers have when you converse with them in their own language. It forever marks you as a unique person who took the time to learn their language-thereby making the world a little more dear and intimate! Bravo young man your gift and discipline inspire hundreds of thousands...
Ok, I really laughed when you said "還沒有你的好“. That's my go-to line when people compliment my Chinese!
What an incredible, wonderful, creative way to engage people whose native language is not English. No matter what language (sorry, I don't know this young man's name), he is speaking, he is always respectful and kind nd I marvel at how people react to him. My mum raised us to include all people in our lives when possible and because that was around 40 years ago, it almost seems like a dying tradition that never took off. My life has been enriched by including an eclectic group of friends and past co-workers. What a joy to watch the joy and appreciation on these folks faces (even under their masks!), when they witness this wonderful kid who actually took the time to try to learn to communicate in their native tongue. It's what we need in this Country right now--this guy should be signing 40 million dollars 5 year contracts like the sports stars. I can't stop smiling.....
I love how you flip the script just by speaking to them🤣🤣🤣🤣
These videos always make me smile, the fact that most people would be offended if someone "talked" about them in another language but you just react normally is so wholesome.
@April city girl to country wife indeed. It's very strange to me how few people understand what's really going on, especially since I'm autistic and really struggle with reading people. If even I can see they're being rude then what's everyone else's excuse 🙃
April city girl to country wife
@mydogeatspuke I like his video but I also noticed the people talking about him were being rude but pretended they meant it nice when they realised he understood. I don't know if they were embarrassed but they should have been.
@Tim Callahan yes exactly. Literally all of these people were denigrating him in their native tongue assuming he wouldn't understand them. That is insulting. They even try to pretend they were saying they liked it when they realise he understood every word. It's not wholesome, he's just making money off how predictably awful people are and more power to him.
Im a fan of him- but even if he was offended his cera is open
I love how he really doesn't let them go too long not knowing. Some people would easily make these videos more about embarrassing others.
It's funny that in our modern age,we still have people talking behind a foreigner's back. It's the equivalent of an adult talking badly about a child while said child is but a few feet away from them.
They're commenting on the clothing which clearly reads "Foreigner." Nobody on the planet sells sweatshirts like that.
I'd love see a full video of just you being recognised and the brief conversations
I just love when you crack them up and their mouths drop. So funny.
I got shout out respect for the food hall workers for deciding to tell him what his shirt means and include him on the joke before they found out he is fluent. I didn't speak a word of Mandarin when I visited Taiwan but still felt very welcomed and it was a super friendly place.
These videos just make me feel calm and happy 😂 I study Mandarin because of yours and Laoshu505000s videos, inspiring content, Xièxiè
