Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

There are two types of mindsets we can cultivate. One that embraces problems as opportunities to learn, and one that avoids them, often out of fear to fail. People that avoid conflicts can be described as having a fixed mindset. Those who see problems as interesting challenges have a growth mindset. Sometimes we like to switch from one to the other.

I feel like im a fixed mindset guy. I really wanna learn more but my 2 biggest problems prevent me from it, those are that im a slow learner and i got some type of social anxiety. when I read something the information from it doesn't stay in my head most of the time so I gotta re read it many times. I also doubt knowledge a lot, like ill just read or learn something and think it might be false even though i know what i read/learn before was supposedly true. Did bad in english class because of that. main reason why I didn't go to college. Ive been quiet my whole life, there were days in elementary school where i didn't say 1 word for the whole school day. as i got into highschool i had some friends id talked to but i still hardly talk to them. i never went to anything my friends invited me to because i feel like it would've been less enjoyable for them because i wasn't one to talk much. i never really consider them to be real friends because they thought i was cool and nice probably because i was quiet but i know they didn't really care about me that much. now im an adult and i only enjoy talking to 1 guy at work but its mainly him talking because hes 50 and im 21, most of my interests he doesn't care for and usually old people like to talk because they got a lot of wisdom they like to share. i avoid everything that involves socializing for the last 2 years. i don't even go to my grandmas for the holidays because i don't like talking to my relatives. i don't go out to eat, shopping, movies, etc with family because that involves socializing. all i do now is go home upstairs and play videogames or go jogging to stay in shape. if i ever get into a conversation id stay for a little and then find the opportunity to slip out of it most of the time because i know i don't put out much to conversations. I really want to improve these problems and the solutions i think might work is for slow learning just force myself to read everyday and the social anxiety i think all i need is a best friend(ive never had one) that actually cares about me. Anyone got tips to help me fix my issues? this is more of a cry for help tbh. i want to change but im struggling to overcome these problems, i kind of still wanna go to college but one thing i learned from working 8 hour shift is that most people want someone to talk to make their day go by faster and more enjoyable. so if i did invest into a career im sure they would want someone that could actually socialize with them. Something i wanna add is when im reading or in a conversation i daydream or zone out A LOT, mainly for reading though. Also his probably doesn't relate to the video as much anymore either

Growth mindset, in a way, is very very harmful. There are even scientific research to prove that, go google it. I challenge you. It makes people think they only have themselves to blame. Growth mindset means that... If Steven Spielberg gives up directing movies and starts composing music, with time and effort and grit, he can be as good as John Williams. And if he isn't, he has only himself to blame. If Micheal Phelps gives up swimming and decides to play soccer, with enough time, effort, grit, he can be as good as Leonel Nessi. And if he isn't, he has only himself to blame. If Stephen King gives up writing fiction and starts an acting career, with enough time, effort, grit, he can be as good as Daniel Day Lewis. And if he isn't, he has only himself to blame. You get the point. You can't be everything in the world. There are some certain limitations. BUT if you know your 'premise potential' or 'your own special something' and you choose it, stick with it. With enough time, effort, grit or maybe a little luck, then you will achieve greatness. My point is do not let this harmful mindset torture you on a daily basis blaming yourself over and over again. Look deep inside yourself to find that thing you know you can do best, it may not be something fancy and brainy like the latent quality that will help you become an astronaut or theoretical physicist or brain surgeon. And it's okay. The world is already full of smart people. You can be musician, athlete, artist, or work in entertainment industry. Those things have its charm too.

what if you have a fixed mindset due to depressive or anxious tendencies? the whole nature vs nurture comes into play, however what if you have genetic depression? will you have a fixed mindset due to nature then? what are positives of a fixed mindset?

Sometimes I am Anne, most of the time not. It depens on the situation. When I got bad feedback, I felt sad at first. After a while, I make myself switch from a bad feeling to motivate myself to do better in the future. Before the motivation comes, I cry and take the feedback way to personal. I don't know why but when my classmates score high and I score low, I feel like a loser and stupid. Like I am too dump to be in the same classroom as them.

I used to have a growth mindset and believed I can face any obstacles until I cant. I always challenged myself and choose the hardest thing possible. But failing for 4 years just changes your mindset you know. Sometimes a fixed mindset can be good because sometimes for growth we sacrifice everything like relationship and health (physical and mental) and that is just not worth it.

"Growth" mindset is not a good description...sounds more like brain tumor(endless growth is the nature of cancer). Flexible and creative mind is much better.
surfinmuso
surfinmuso 2 หลายเดือนก่อน
The mind is the most flexible thing in existence...but we have been schooled otherwise. It is an utter tragedy that most of us need to unlearn so much false info....the time wasted, and what we may have achieved... never to be realised.

Schools should praise all the children in the class, as praise makes them feel good and motivates them. All children are good at something and should learn other thing around things they are interested in. If they are good at modelling clay, the teacher could show them from a book or screen about famous people who made money from pottery. They could bring maths in to it. Even if they are quite good you can help them improve. Maybe put 2 children together , 1 maybe good at art, the other good at maths and they could work on a project together sharing their strengths. If this happened in all schools, you'd get happy , positive , productive children. This has to start right from day one of their school lives. Schools will never do it. They will just keep praising and working with the winners. It's sad really as all children in school need to be encouraged on their strengths.

After decades of searching, I have finally figured out the REAL secret to success - PEOPLE. It doesn't matter if you are book smart, if you suck at networking, you are a zero. But if you enjoy making new friends and spend time with them regularly, you will achieve great things even if you have zero education. That means if you were born an extrovert, you are already on your way to success. But if you were born an introvert, well, better luck next time.

Good video. Also the one about which child are you by the environment you were in for the first years of your life. I think even if I put the discipline of practice into something it won’t matter. I’ll never be good enough. How will I know unless I dedicate my time and stick with it. Patience and praise. Feel good along the journey. A new challenge I’ve been ambivalent in taking on I will start today. What can I lose more than not pursuing it at all. Cheers to you all! Go for it too!

I still have a fixed mindset and I was raised in this very way by the people around me including my parents, siblings, friends and even other kids. Though I just seek the easiest path for me as if I take a longer path I get stressed and I take my anger out on those around me or just think of suicidal thoughts

I watched this with one of my students and she shared that one should never give up, try your best, believe in yourself. In addition, failing or making mistakes mean those are the opportunities for growth. And that we aren't born into smartness, but smartness needs to be nurtured and worked on.
