The World's Most Controversial K-Pop Group

K-Pop, or Korean Idol pop music, is a 5 billion dollar industry whose music, fashion, stars and lifestyle have taken the world by storm. But while K-Pop’s fanbase has diversified, most K-Pop idols haven’t - so what happens when white people try and become K-Pop idols themselves?
On this episode of 'MINORITY REPORTS,' VICE sent Lee Adams to Seoul, South Korea to meet EXP Edition, the world’s first non-Korean K-Pop group. The group’s 4 members - Koki Tomlinson, Frankie DaPonte, Hunter Kohl and Šime Košta - believe you don’t need to be Korean in order to do K-Pop. When they debuted, EXP Edition faced a lot of criticism from mostly non-Korean K-Pop fans, who claimed the group was misappropriating Korean culture. EXP Edition maintains this pushback happens to anyone trying to break into a new genre of music - but is the group going too far in their attempt to be K-Pop idols?
We explore the wildly popular world of K-Pop and raise questions of where the line is drawn between cultural appreciation vs cultural appropriation and who should actually draw it.

Meanwhile in Asia: Koreans worship white people and that's all it'll take to form a band group with no effort. Meanwhile in America: Asian Americans get virtually no roles in high budget movies and are non existent on the billboards, unless they are foreign.

They got Chinese and Thai in Kpop what's wrong with American in Kpop. This is just bs. Kpop is just a slave contract why should anyone be angered by it.

Just a business, who cares. Are they stealing songs? Dance routines? Hurting anybody (feelings don't count)? If not, I don't care. Let the market decide the demand.

I think they getting so much backlash is because of what they wear! They dress like a preppy George Michael from the 80’s!! Lots of pink and white! The guy with the earring even looks like him! If they want to be K-pop they should wear darker colors and cooler clothes! They are different enough without going to the extreme! The first picture of them was better! They should go back to that! Just saying! 💖🙋🏼‍♀️🇺🇸🤷🏼‍♀️💖

One problem that is coming from the groups managers is that they are trying to appear unbiased through the guise of being an experiment. But when you hold an experiment, you present your theory and see how the data collection compares to it. The collection of fans reactions is that it is not working, do to it not appearing authentic and manufactured, with their inability to properly enunciate their words. The managers keep defending their stance and are no longer operating from an unobjective, unbiased science stance but a monetary and success drive. They have no credibility to say this group is or is not representative of kpop. Instead, they should be seeking the opinions of cultural professors and those that can come from an unbiased stance.

Also for everyone saying they're really bad. Yeah. What do you think the budget of this group is compared to the big kpop groups. KPOP music is manufactured and very heavily produced. The amount of money that goes into non-stop training, promotion and production is insane. IMO, kpop is basically "throw money at it until its good".

DON'T TAKE KPOP AWAY FROM ASIANS! It makes sense Korean nationals respond differently from non-Koreans. In Korea, Koreans are surrounded by Asians in Tv/movie, music, politics, business, etc. But in the rest of the world there's a terrible lack of Asian presence and representation. The world is 60% Asian but how much Asian representation do you see?1 out of 5? 1 out of 10? 1 out of 20? 1 out of 30? Maybe 1 out of 30, if that.Of that how many specifically Korean? And never ever a starring role. Asians don't get a seat at the big table due to racial exclusion. Don't take away a seat at their tiny, ridiculously overcrowded table. kPop is so competitive: there are limited spots. Watch it, love it, share it. But don't take crumbs away from a starving population. BTW: This isn't about Korean chauvinism or xenophobia. Notice I always say "Asian" not "Korean". An entire continent underrepresented.

Yumi NG
Yumi NG 28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Here's the thing ( this is purely my opinion btw and feel free to think otherwise) one of the main things I love about Kpop is the Asian representation. Asians have always been severely underrepresented in the music industry which always saddened me. So when Kpop came along, I was really happy not only because I liked the music, but also because Asians were finally getting the spotlight in this industry. So when white people come along and become Kpop idols, it just feels like yet another thing in the industry being westernised. And the thing is, at the end of the day, Kpop is just pop in a different language, so why can't they become pop artists instead. I know that there are a lot of differences between pop and Kpop but for the arguments sake I will only focus on a few because the others like the intense training and the severe pressure to remain skinny or never act out, aren't exactly desirable. First there is the language, Korean is a very nice language and it makes sense that others want to speak it, but most white Kpop idols I've seen don't know it well enough to sing it, because it is also a very difficult one, so when they sing in it, it can come across as disrespecting the language ( of course this is just from what I have seen, there will obviously be non Koreans who can speak it very well). And I know that a lot of Kpop idols sing in English sometimes, but that is really only because they have such an international fanbase and English is an International language. The next main difference is the fact that Kpop idols HAVE to be very good at singing/ rapping and dancing and have to be pretty and skinny to just qualify as an idol, but it's not like there aren't multitalented people in the Pop industry, plus most pop artists are conventionally attractive, though pop is certainly more accepting to different body types, which is wonderful and something Kpop should be too. The last difference I will talk about is the aesthetic and concepts, Kpop has different aesthetic than pop, like how some of their concepts are cute, which is not exactly something you see with pop. But it's not like you can't have Kpop influence in your music videos or outfits as a pop artists, as Kpop has a lot of influence from western pop, it would be really nice to see Kpop having an influence on Pop. Basically I see no reason why these people can't be pop artists, and still have a Kpop inspired aesthetic and structure ( rap line, vocal line, dance line that sort of thing) in their groups or just their music in general. Of course, this is all my opinion, and maybe I'm biased because I'm asian, but I hope you can respect and understand it and I mean no offence to people of other races, because, again, this is just how I personally feel on the subject.

This is what I see here, with comments and the ones that got interviewed. I see the same behavors as the bad behavior but now is being taken to the other extreme, but the same behavior nevertheless. Nothing but judgment and seperation,I get the importances of not blending everything, but the way most people are going about it, even the "righteous" , is nothing but hate, I live in a word full of hate, even if you are trying to dress it up with righteousness, still hate. So sad. Not liking it is a choice, but there is no need to go the extra mile. Im not a fan of k-pop, but I thought it was interesting and courageous at the same time.

I think if they were just younger western men doing K-pop, it wouldn't have made it so cringy. It just feels awkward to see this. There's a reason why K-Pop idols are trained at such a younger age. These men lack agility, they still need to work on their dance moves and Korean pronunciation, etc. But then again it was just an experiment so who knows if they'll end up super famous or not. And I also find that most of the people who are against western people trying to form K-Pop groups like them are mostly western people themselves. Asians like me tend to feel like it's actually an honor for someone to be inspired by K-Pop genre of music and wanting to know more about Korean culture and the K-Pop industry, and if possible also be a K-Pop idol. I think at the end of the day music is a universal language that is meant to be understood by everyone. It's the one thing that I find shouldn't be just for one race, but all human race. Take for example hip hop and rap, it used to be predominantly black artists, but then white people now are more and more accepted into it. So is for example pop is predominantly white artists but then it doesn't mean other people can't do pop. I think that at the end of the day if it's done tastefully people won't be bashing on other people trying to do K-pop too. Besides, if people do look carefully, nowadays when people see K-Pop artists, most of them are not even pure Korean anymore. Blackpink has Lisa from Thailand, Secret number has Dita from Indonesia, TXT has Huening Kai who is biracial (Korean-American), GOT7 has Mark who is Taiwanese-American, EXO's Lay is Chinese, Twice's Mina, Momo, and Sana are Japanese, and the lists go on. So is K-Pop only meant to be all Korean? Of course not. I consider it as a pop genre of music that is developed with the Korean style of hard work by Koreans for everyone to enjoy and be part of it. If anything, I also see that the K-Pop industries are trying to diversify themselves more and more. I mean Bighit and Source Music are currently collaborating to have an all-girl Japanese group trainee straight from Japan for their next K-pop group.

I feel like appropriation is when you claim you invented something that is done by another culture which they clearly aren't, they just want to be a part of it. I don't even like K-pop but this "cultural appropriation " overreaction in America is definitely a negative thing. I know the historical reason for this but really seems to be doing more damage than good, it sort of reduces the fight for racial equality and justice to petty internet fights.
