The World's Most Controversial K-Pop Group

K-Pop, or Korean Idol pop music, is a 5 billion dollar industry whose music, fashion, stars and lifestyle have taken the world by storm. But while K-Pop’s fanbase has diversified, most K-Pop idols haven’t - so what happens when white people try and become K-Pop idols themselves?
On this episode of 'MINORITY REPORTS,' VICE sent Lee Adams to Seoul, South Korea to meet EXP Edition, the world’s first non-Korean K-Pop group. The group’s 4 members - Koki Tomlinson, Frankie DaPonte, Hunter Kohl and Šime Košta - believe you don’t need to be Korean in order to do K-Pop. When they debuted, EXP Edition faced a lot of criticism from mostly non-Korean K-Pop fans, who claimed the group was misappropriating Korean culture. EXP Edition maintains this pushback happens to anyone trying to break into a new genre of music - but is the group going too far in their attempt to be K-Pop idols?
We explore the wildly popular world of K-Pop and raise questions of where the line is drawn between cultural appreciation vs cultural appropriation and who should actually draw it.

I'm not korean, but if I was and I see this group, I would be proud of my country's music industry spreading into other countries. I do not want to offend anyone. For I am just making a statement.

I really hope one Day Kpop is just music in Korean and not just Koreans making music

even if it's kpop there's Blackpink's Lisa and GOT7's BamBam who are Thai and there's Twice's Momo who is fully Japanese, Eric Nam is not korean, Henry Lau is also not Korean, GOT7 Jackson Wang is Chinese, and they are all major stars of Kpop so... Kpop is like an industry of music that has been created in Korea, it's not a music industry for Koreans, consisted of Koreans.

- I wish them well, it took guts to do what they did. - NOT ALL WESTERN PEOPLE LOOK OLDER THAN THEY ARE. LOL. - I wish the koreaboos would admit they hate them just because they want Korean boys that look 12years old to fetishize. Like there aren't enough already. - Kpop is absolutely NOT "typically Korean", it has a huge western influence. - I've just seen a Kpop video where Korean girls were dressed like French at Versailles with wigs and everything, and nobody commented it was "cultural appropriation".

Some of the most popular debuted groups have had Korean members scouted from other countries who didn't speak Korean and had to learn. These individuals have preformed and been criticized for the fact that they struggle with the language and pronunciation. Jay Park and 2pm is a great example of this, early in their career he had to leave the group due to controversy over him struggling with learning the language, yet look at where he is now. All this criticism over them being American/white is irrelevant imo as long as they're respectful and sincere. Good on them.

I think it'll be hard to actually make it in Korea for them because of the language barrier. When I hear someone with a heavy accent Singing in Chinese I also cringe because the language is no longer pleasant to listen to or perhaps just incomprehensible. 🤣 Why do you think sm hired so money chinese guys to break into the chinese industry for exo? Prior to exo they tried breaking in using tvxq and super junior which were both popular of course but the fans always liked their Korean versions more. When exo made the biggest headway at the fasted rate because they could actually communicate with Chinese fans. Now if they sang K-pop style in English instead of just Korean they might actually do better.

Ok. I personally don't think it's fair because there are idols that train for years, YEARS. To even try and be considered an idol, and that's if they have the aesthetic and appeal! Doesn't matter if they were Korean or half Asian, whatever. This just doesn't work, and their Korean pronunciation isn't great, either. Idk why they got a pass, because Koreans cater to Caucasian people more? Idk it's just weird. They don't fit the aesthetic, and they look middle aged too 🤷🏼‍♀️

The music is kind of lame. In general I mean. In addition to that the guys do not really seem interesting and the styles they are wearing do not suit them at all.

This comment section sounds ignorant. How they look and their age isn't the point. The point is that they are being black mailed out of the Korean music industry and are receiving death threat because they are white. This is a racial and cultural issue.

It's only fucked up in the context of western culture because white guys have historically had everything culturally. But remeber that this is for an eastern market, where white people are a novelty and actually under represented. I think they should be able to do it, but i'm sure as shit not listening to a note of it!

i would imagine if freud where to psychoanalyze the white liberal and other westerners who "love k pop" and are upset that these guys aren't korean, he would come to obvious conclusion that most of them just like k pop to make themselves feel special and these guy's being white might bring the genre mainstream in the usa and they won't be the "cool people" who know about something underground. i also think the white fans are jealous these goofy gay white guys are doing something they wish they could. classic player hating bullshht

It really seems like "cultural appropriation" is such an American centrist idea. What gives American's the idea they need to protect other groups other than I wholly agree an orientalist centered world view.

i think you're right. it's really a ridiculous concept. imagine white people getting mad because everyone else is wearing jeans and sneakers. "cultural appropriation" is nothing more than admiration for a culture, how is that a bad thing?

Ok, if you want to be a kpop idol you need to play by their rules. 1. they all have to be good looking(yes thats shallow but in kpop thats just how it is) 2. Needs to be a singer, rapper, dancer, and a visual (at least 1) 3. Usually they need to be under 23 to debut...because if not they are seen as too old. 4. need to have full albums and title track mvs and the song needs to be choreographed 5. Must train for minimum 2 years (im not sure on that one but need to train for some period of time)

Okay. I might be late to this but let me try to analyze why people are hating on them and then state my own opinion about the critics. The appearance, I don't think it's about the age they look like. To me they look like 25 year old Americans. However people say they look like 40. But that's mostly because of their masculine features, due to their Western heritage. And if you compare them to other "pure" K-pop bands, the other Kpop bands are more feminine. And those feminine bands have established that aesthetic of feminine masculinity. But this band however does not have the feminine facial features. And thus doesn't compliment to said aesthetic. And that's why they feel out of place for most critics. They feel cringe because they're not getting the aesthetic they are used to seeing. I am sure it's not only because of their pronounciation, because they have been practicing a lot the past years. Their personality? Come on. They're one of the most vanilla guys I have ever seen. And I don't think there's a huge difference between the other Kpop bands personality wise. That means, to me it seems like the critics are ignorant and are not willing to see a change, thus they keep being gate keeping assholes. Do you agree with me or not? I'd like to hear your thoughts either way.

I think it would do them GOOD if they changed their stylist, for hair, wardrobe and makeup. Because the style of looks they’re giving this group isn’t looking right and it’s pretty much screwing up things for them. I feel like since the men here look a bit older, it would help if they were styled in more mature outfits to suit the image

I mean goodluck to them but boy groups are 95% aesthetic and 5% talent sooooooooo. If I'm not visually enthralled what's the point.
